Join as a Volunteer or Civilian Instructor

Picture
Not everyone who wants to teach cadets is an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces. Civilian volunteers complement the knowledge and skill set of the Cadet Instructors Cadre. To ensure the safety of the cadets, civilian volunteers are required to undergo much the same screening as Cadet Instructors Cadre Officers.

Let the Commanding Officer know if you have special skills. People with experience in first aid, rock-climbing, bush craft, survival, and so on are not always easy to find!
Adults that want to get involved can:
  • Assist with organizing and teaching on regular training nights.
  • Attend weekend Field Training Exercises and assist the staff.
  • Help coach and mentor the various teams and groups.
  • Speak to a group of cadets about a special skill that complements their training as appropriate.

We are always looking for volunteers who can help run the activities that play such an important role in the lives of our young members.  All kinds of people make up our volunteer staff, coming from a range of backgrounds and interests. If you have direct experience working with young people, or any other relevant skills you want to share, alternatively if you don’t know if you have a skill we need, but you just want to help, come talk to us!

Civilian Instructors (CI) are paid employees of the Department of National Defence who have been engaged on contract to fill generalist vacancies where a CIC Officer is not available or to provide specialist training.

Civilian Volunteers (CV) are un-paid volunteers who support the organization by either working with unit staff under supervision or by participation in the Support Committee.

Technical Advisors are full-time, Regular Force and Reserve Force, members of the Canadian Armed Forces. Technical Advisors volunteer their personal time, outside of their working hours and with the support of their chain of command, to support activities and development at the corps.

Cadet Instructors supervise and train young adults of the Royal Canadian Sea, Army and Air Cadet Corps and Squadrons.

Although they may be assigned an administrative role, the primary duties of the Cadet Instructors are to work with and train youth in such activities as: t
eam sports, survival skills, expeditions, trekking, etc.
Working environment Officers of the Cadet Instructors Cadre are members of the Reserve Force working as part of the Cadet Organizations Administration and Training Service (CATO). They are asked to commit six hours per week and one weekend per month.

Cadet Instructors may work at any of the 1100 cadet corps and squadrons in Canada, or one of the 22 Cadet Summer Training Centres. Cadet corps and squadrons parade in schools, community centres, armouries and churches. The majority of the cadet summer training centres are located at Forces Bases, where staff and cadets train for periods up to 7 weeks during the summer months.
